Mamata Banerjee Demands Modi, CEC Resign; INDIA Bloc Plans ‘Save Democracy’ Marches

The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, is calling for the resignation of both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, thus intensifying the opposition's criticism of the government and the Election Commission.
Her demand comes as the INDIA bloc announced “Save Democracy” marches beginning October 2, placing electoral transparency and concerns over voter lists at the centre of its planned protests.

What Is the Opposition Demanding?

Opposition leaders are demanding greater transparency and accountability with regard to the electoral processes; their criticism is based on accusations of irregularities in the voter lists, including allegations of manipulation.
The allegations are still in dispute. The authorities have dismissed the accusations, and the information currently available does not stand alone as proof of wrongdoing.
The fact that Banerjee has called for his resignation contributes to the political strife, drawing both the prime minister and the chief election commissioner into criticism from the opposition.

When Are the Marches Planned?

The INDIA bloc has declared a number of marches which will take place from October 2, and the opposition leaders state that the demonstrations will bring attention to their worries regarding the electoral processes and the way the voter lists have been handled.
There will also be a march heading for the Election Commission in Delhi on October 6. This planned protest will present the opposition's demands for transparency and accountability in the national capital.

Why Does the Dispute Matter?

The clash is over conflicting assertions regarding electoral integrity, since the opposition parties are casting doubt on the accuracy of the voter list and the authorities are denying the charges of manipulation.
The marches that have been announced represent the opposition's next move in bringing those concerns to public attention. Further official statements will be necessary for explaining the claims and the responses.
